The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is your identification number as a foreign national in Spain. It is not residency: it is the number that identifies you in every official step.

What is an NIE number?
The foreigner identification number Spain gives to foreign nationals with economic, professional or social interests in the country. It is not a residence permit.
Do I need an NIE to buy a property in Spain?
Yes. Every buyer who is not Spanish needs their own NIE to sign the deed, pay the purchase tax and register the property. Couples need one each.
Can I get my NIE without travelling to Spain?
Yes. With a power of attorney signed online, a legal team in Spain books the appointment and files the application for you. Once issued, the certificate arrives by email.
Does it work for any nationality?
It is designed for foreign nationals wherever they live. Before filing, I confirm the documents you need for your nationality and your reason for applying.
Is the NIE the same as the TIE or residency?
No. The NIE is only a number. The TIE is the physical foreigner identity card, and residency is a separate permit.
Does the NIE number expire?
The number is assigned to you for life. The certificate that shows it is what you present to banks and notaries.
